Stress remains an ongoing problem with people of all ages, and studies have proven that stress can lead to a variety of health conditions including everything from eczema, mood swings, and even heart problems.

Vanilla has been known for ages to lighten one’s mood. It has even been mentioned in the flagship book by our founder, Joseph Meyer, “The Herbalist.” Here below is an excerpt from the book:

Vanilla (Vanilla Aromatica)

Medicinal Part: The fruit or pods
Description: Vanilla Aromatica is a shrubby, climbing, aerial parasite, growing in the clefts of rocks, or attaching itself to the trunks of trees. It suspends itself to contiguous objects, and is truly and aerial plant. The stem is round, about as thick as the finger, from twenty to thirty feet in length, and often thicker at the summit than at the base. The leaves are alternate, oblong, entire, on short petioles, green fleshy, and pointed by a species of bean, yellow or buff color, of an agreeable aromatic odor; the beans must be dried with care or they will lose their properties.
Vanilla grows in Mexico and other parts of tropical South America. There are several species which are supposed to furnish the vanilla of commerce. It yields its virtues to water or alcohol.
Properties and Uses: Vanilla has been employed for its stimulating action, but its use today is as a flavoring agent.

In addition to soothing the mind, vanilla has been used as a tonic for soothing an upset tummy. However, the most widely known use for vanilla is baking. Quick tip: if you are trying to sell your home, bake some vanilla cookies or simply warm some Vanilla Essential Oil to create a “buying mood” for your prospects.

Botanic Choice is proud to carry an array of aromatherapy products and essential oils which includes our Vanilla Essential Oil. I was excited to read a new article from our friends at the American Botanical Council on the profoundly healthy effects black tea may have. Here is the article:

Black Tea Intake Improves Lipid Profile and Antioxidant Status

Tea (Camellia sinensis) has been reported to promote good health. Black tea contains high levels of polyphenols, with the major phenols being the flavan-3-ols, the flavonols, the flavones, and quinic acid esters of gallic, coumaric, and caffeic acids. Although tea consumption may help protect against cardiovascular diseases (a benefit attributed to its polyphenols), “the intricate mechanisms of polyphenolic action still need to be comprehensively understood,” write the authors. They conducted a randomized, controlled, parallel clinical trial to determine the effects of black tea consumption on fasting serum glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, as well as the antioxidant status in a normal population in the Republic of Mauritius.

To be eligible, the participants had to be nonsmokers or former smokers between ages 25 and 60 years, with an alcohol intake of fewer than 2 drinks daily, and a cardiac ejection fraction (a measure of how well the heart is pumping) greater than 40%. If postmenopausal, female participants could not be receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Of the 87 participants recruited for the 15-week trial, 77 (42 men and 35 women) completed it.

The treatment group consumed 3 standard cups of 200 mL of black tea infusate daily for 12 weeks without additives, followed by a 3-week washout period during which they drank the same amount of hot water daily. The control group consumed equal amounts of hot water for the same intervention period. Tea bags were purchased from Mauritius Corson Tea Estate Co. Ltd (Curepipe, Mauritius). The tea had high levels of gallic acid derivatives (50 ± 0.4 mg/L), flavan-3-ols (42 ± 2 mg/L), flavonols (32 ± 1 mg/L), and theaflavins (89 ± 1 mg/L). The Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) values were 1055 ± 25 µmol/g and 825 ± 23 µmol/g of dry weight, respectively.

Fasting blood samples were drawn at baseline, at week 12, and at week 15. The mean fasting blood glucose level at baseline was 134 ± 66 mg/dL for the men and 111 ± 38 mg/dL for the women. At 12 weeks, those levels dropped significantly for the men (30.2%) and for the women (14.8%) (P<0.001). Nonsignificant decreases were observed in the control groups. The washout generally increased the blood glucose level in the study groups. The authors note that the baseline levels in both groups were higher than the international standard values and that the Mauritian population is reported to have a 23.6% incidence of diabetes. Examining the results of this trial, the authors conclude that “an antihyperglycemic effect of black tea can therefore be anticipated.”

Tea consumption did not significantly influence TC levels in the men, but an increase of 14% (P<0.05) was reported for the women. After the washout period, very slight nonsignificant increases were reported in the tea group compared with the levels at week 12. Very slight nonsignificant increases were also noted in the control group.

The baseline TG levels (166 ± 138 mg/dL for the men and 102 ± 65 mg/dL for the women) were significantly reduced by 38.6% for the men and 28.6% for the women (P<0.01) after 12 weeks of tea consumption. After the washout, TG levels increased significantly by 25% in the men and 24% in the women (P<0.05). At week 12, the control group reported nonsignificant decreases of TG levels in both men and women, which were then followed by nonsignificant increases after the washout period. “Relatively marked non-significant reductions were also observed in the control groups thereby questioning the apparent inertness of hot water,” the authors state.

At week 12, a slight nonsignificant reduction of LDL cholesterol was noted in the men in the tea group, while a nonsignificant increase was seen among the women. Washout increased the LDL levels nonsignificantly in both men and women. In the hot water group, nonsignificant increases in LDL cholesterol were noted in both men and women.

At week 12, those in the tea consumption group had significantly increased HDL cholesterol levels: 17% (P<0.05) in the men and 24% in the women (P<0.05). After the washout period, highly significant increases of 15% in the men and 29% in the women (P<0.001) were recorded. In the control group, no significant changes were recorded for the men, while a highly significant increase of 50% (P<0.001) was reported for the women’s HDL cholesterol levels; a significant increase (16.7%, P<0.05) continued during the washout period.

The mean LDL/HDL ratio (a predictor of atherosclerosis risk, with a ratio <3 considered normal) values for the men and women in the tea group were 2.65 ± 1.3 and 2.47 ± 1.5, respectively. After tea consumption, the tea-treated group reported an overall significant decrease of 16.6% (P<0.05). The ratio values decreased further during the washout period (nonsignificantly in the men and significantly [P<0.05] in the women).

The plasma total antioxidant activity was assessed by measuring TEAC and FRAP values. A significant increase was seen in FRAP values in tea-treated men (440%, P<0.05) and tea-treated women (386%, P<0.05) at week 12, followed by a significant increase in the men during the washout period (P<0.01). Hot water induced a significant increase of 482% (P<0.01) in the men and a nonsignificant increase in the women at week 12.

TEAC values were slightly reduced by tea intake in the men (P<0.05) and women (P<0.05) at week 12. Following the washout period, the decrease continued for the men, while the women recorded a very slight significant increase (P<0.01). In the control group at week 12, a decrease in TEAC values was observed for both men (P<0.01) and women (nonsignificant), followed by nonsignificant increases after the washout.

As seen in this study, the moderate intake of black tea improved the plasma levels of some of the cardiovascular disease risk factors and total antioxidant capacity. “Although the underlying biological mechanisms for these effects and the exact role of phenolics warrant an extensive study, tea may provide an important source of dietary antioxidants in many individuals,” conclude the authors.

Menopause is the naturally occurring event in a women’s life when hormonal changes cease menstruation and experience a reduction in estrogen. The average age of the onset of menopause is 51 years of age, but it can happen earlier or later.

While it is, of course, not a disease by any means, menopause does have some symptoms which include hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood changes among others. Luckily, many of these symptoms can be relieved or minimized with great health practices including a good diet, exercise, and healthy rest. Studies also show that some herbal remedies may also be able to help.

Our friends and the American Botanical Council have recently posted the following article regarding Black Cohosh and St. John’s Wort playing a part in quelling the negative experiences of menopause:

Menopausal Symptoms Relieved with Black Cohosh/St. John’s Wort Combination

Menopause is accompanied by various climacteric symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, urogenital atrophy, irregular menstruation, insomnia, depression, palpitations, and headaches. Because of the risks associated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), women often turn to alternative therapies to relieve these symptoms. Among the alternative therapies are preparations of black cohosh (Actaea racemosa syn. Cimicifuga racemosa [CR]) rhizome/roots, chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus [AC]) fruit, and St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum [HP]) flowering tops. Several products with these ingredients are available as monotherapy. These authors conducted a systematic review of the literature to assess the effectiveness of alternative drugs for the treatment of vasomotor, cognitive, and genital climacteric complaints.

The authors searched PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE (1948-2009), and EMBASE (1980-2009) for randomized controlled trials published in German or English. They included trials of subjects with vasomotor, genital, and cognitive climacteric complaints using supplements of CR, HP, and/or AC, vitamins, or minerals. The subjects had to be using no medication for their symptoms other than the study drug.

Twelve study reports were included in the review with a total of 1,573 patients; 11 of the studies had a double-blind design, the other did not. One study was excluded from the analysis because of low quality (as determined by using the Jadad Scale) and no description of blinding. Group results that were published as two studies and three studies were combined for evaluation as two single studies; one of these groups included comparisons of CR with both placebo and estrogen.

Four studies examined the effects of CR and placebo, and two studies examined the effect of the mixture of CR and HP in comparison to placebo. In three studies, the effect of CR and estrogens or the synthetic hormone drug tibolone was evaluated. Therapy with AC was found in only one RCT and was administered in combination with HP.

Of the four studies examining the effects of CR versus placebo, three1-3 showed no significant difference in the total population for scores on the Wiklund Menopause Symptom and Vasomotor Symptom scales, the Kupperman Index hot flashes score, and the Menopause Rating Scale (MSR) for hot flashes. In the other study,4 an improvement in MSR hot flashes (after three months, P=0.007) was seen, but no other vasomotor symptoms improved. The evaluation of frequency of sweating episodes showed a significant difference in the CR group but not in the estrogen group in one study.2 In that same study, the ratio of nights with waking up early decreased significantly in the CR group (P<0.05).

Two studies2,4 reported significantly improved vaginal atrophy in the total population (P=0.022 and P=0.012). Although those same two studies showed a positive effect on the patient’s mental score or psyche, the authors conclude that the overall trend shows that CR has no significant evidence-based effect on the psychological state of menopausal women. To summarize, the authors write that they could not find any evidence for the benefit of CR monotherapy in the treatment of menopausal symptoms compared to placebo. They point to the very high-quality study by Newton1 in which an approximately four-fold higher drug dose compared with the other studies was administered, which, nevertheless, showed no significant difference among the groups. However, they write, “a tendency observed is a minor effect of CR on vasomotor complaints but a more substantial effect on the improvement of vaginal atrophy.”

The two studies using the CR/HP combination versus placebo reported a significant improvement in vasomotor symptoms (P<0.001 and P=0.021).5,6 One of the studies5 showed a significant improvement of somatic complaints and psychological state (P<0.001 for both), while the other did not examine these parameters directly. Neither of the studies reported a clinically relevant improvement in vaginal atrophy. Although only two studies were included, the authors conclude that “a combination of CR and HP seems to be more effective than placebo, particularly in the treatment of vasomotor complaints.”

Of the studies evaluating the effects of CR versus estrogens/tibolone, two showed no significant differences in the treatment of climacteric complaints between CR and estrogens2 or tibolones.7

In the lone study of HP plus AC versus placebo,8 none of the measured end points (vasomotor symptoms, somatic complaints, sleep disorders, sexual disorders, and mental disorders) was improved significantly compared with placebo.

The analysis of these studies shows that the adverse side effects of CR, its combination with HP, and a combination of AC and HP are comparable with those of the placebos used.

The limitations of this review include a lack of transparency in many of the studies, the small number of studies that met the criteria, and the different products and dosages of the herbal substances used in the studies. Also, the authors found it difficult or impossible to compare studies because different scales were used to assess the symptoms.

“On the basis of all studies involved in this systematic review, we could show a significant effect of a combination of CR and HP in the treatment of climacteric complaints,” conclude the authors, calling for more evidence-based studies on monotherapy with other substances.

It’s been all over the news lately. If you’re only going to take one vitamin a day, make it Vitamin D. Why?

Since the rise in the use of sunscreen and increased time spent indoors on the computer, playing video games and so on, levels of Vitamin D, which is obtained through sunshine, have been decreasing significantly. Vitamin D is necessary for bone health, and now research suggests breast health as well. It seems breast issues are more of a concern for women living in northern climates where there is less sunshine, than for those living in the sunny south. Today, more and more men and women are now supplementing with Vitamin D for calcium absorption, strong bones, anti-aging support, heart, muscle tone, mood, and just about everything else!

While there are several forms of Vitamin D, two major forms are Vitamin D2 and D3. This brings me to a question I frequently get: What’s the difference in Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3? Read on to learn which is right for you.

Vitamin D2 (also known as Vitamin D)

Vitamin D3

Known as ergocalciferol

Known as cholecalciferol.

Human beings do not make Vitamin D2.

Human beings make Vitamin D3 and because of that, it is actually considered a hormone.

Derived from plant and fungal source, making it a good choice for vegetarians.

Naturally occurring form made in your skin when sunlight hits your skin for 10-15 minutes, without sunscreen.

Produced by irradiating fungus/yeast with ultraviolet light.

Derived from animal sources and made in the skin when 7-dehydrocholesterol reacts with UVB ultraviolet light.

The first synthetic form of Vitamin D produced in the early 1920s.

Believed to be more effective at increasing levels of Vitamin D in the blood.

Used to fortify foods like dairy, juices and cereals.

Is the form most utilized in clinical trials.

Many major prescriptions use Vitamin D2. Can be written for up to 50,000 units.

More stable form when exposed to temperature, humidity, and other environmental conditions.

Shorter shelf life.

Longer shelf life.

If you’re going to supplement with Vitamin D, make sure it’s high quality, like the kind you find at Botanic Choice. Personally, I prefer Super D3 Plus because it not only delivers extremely high quality Vitamin D3, but it also gives you four other nutrients – alpha lipoic acid, Korean ginseng, melatonin and L-Glutathione – to further support strong bones and a healthy immune system.

Whether it’s due to rising health care costs or a desire to lead a more natural life, many of my patients have recently become interested in homeopathy. Here are the basics about this alternative medical system.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is based on the scientific principle of “like cures like,” also called the Law of Similars. Treatment involves giving extremely small doses of substances that produce the same response. For example, when you suffer from allergies, a specific homeopathic formula targets the allergic response. This builds up your body’s natural immune system. Here are a few specific substances and conditions they treat:

Name

Description

Allium cepa

Commonly known as red onion, homeopaths use a diluted extract of this to treat symptoms similar to that of a red onion – water eyes, burning, etc.

Apis

Also known as the honeybee, apis is made from the body of the bee and is used to treat symptoms similar to that of a bee sting – swelling, redness, etc.

Ipecac

Ipecacinduces vomiting and causes gastrointestinal distress and is used to tre at similar problems.

How did homeopathy get started?

In the early 1700s, German chemist, Samuel Hahneman devised a gentler medical al

ternative to the harsher treatments of the day like bloodletting and poisoning. In time, homeopathy was brought to America. Over the next few centuries, its popularity ebbed and flowed, with a dramatic renewed interest in the 1960s. Today it’s estimated that over 6 million Americans use homeopathy. Worldwide, it’s part of the national healthcare systems of several countries including Germany, Britain, India, Mexico and more.

What conditions do homeopathic remedies treat?

Remedies are comprehensive including…

Acute – short-term conditions such as fevers, bruises, infections, pain, allergies. These generally work within one or two doses or within a few hours of taking the remedy. Generally, you should see improvement in three to seven days.

Chronic – long term conditions such as Psoriasis and Diabetes can take years to treat. A rule of thumb is that however long you have had the condition, it will take that long for improvement.

Constitutional – is the genetic make up of the vitality, body and tissues in your body as well as temperament. Typically, these conditions are diagnosed by a homeopathic practitioner.

Where can I find homeopathic remedies?

If you’re going to put something into your body, I always recommend you find the highest quality products you can. That’s why Botanic Choice is my top recommendation for homeopathics. You’ll find an enormous range of remedies for everything from acne to yeast clear – 28 different ones in all. You’re sure to find just what you need. Plus, Botanic Choice has an unconditional, risk-free guarantee so you order with confidence.

If you’re looking for a natural approach to good health, homeopathy is really worth a try.

Amid the the other vegetation found on the premises was a Trillium plant–a flower relate to the Lily. Trillium is rare in this part of Indiana, and the location of this fragile flower was in an unlikely elevation of soil.

The Trillium is protected in several parts of North America because plucking its flowers inflicts serious injuries to the plant threatening its health. More can be read about Trillium in this article. While not rare in some parts of the US, it is quite rare in this part of Indiana.

What was really exciting about this article in particular was that the book of our founder Joseph Meyer, The Herbalist, was cited in this article. The excerpt from The Herbalist is as follows:

Beth Root

(Trillium Pendulum, Lily of the Valley Family)
Common Names: Wake Robin, Indian Balm, Ground Lily, Birth Root, Cough Root, Jewsharp, Snakebite
Medicinal Part: The root.
Description: This is an herbaceious perennial plant, having an oblong tuberous root, from which arises a slender stem from ten to fifteen inches high. The leaves are three in number, acuminate, from three to five inches in diameter, with a very short petiole. The flowers are white, sepals green, petals ovate and acute, styles erect, and stigmas recurved.
This plant is common in the Middle and Western states, growing in rich soils and shady woods, flowering in May and June. There are many varieties, all possessing analogous medicinal properties. These plants may be generally known by their three net-veined leaves and their solitary terminal flower, which varies in color in different species, being whitish yellow, and reddish white.
Properties and Uses: It is astringent, and when boiled in milk is of eminent benefit to diarrhea. The root made into a poultice is very useful in stings of insects. The leaves boiled in lard is a god external application.
Dose: One teaspoonful of the root to a cup of boiling water. Drink hot or cold upon retiring at night. One or two cupfuls may be taken a day. of the tincture, 1/4 to 1/2 fl. dr.

Ann happily stated that she was glad to learn that the flower was indeed a rare find as she might have pulled it out as a weed or otherwise unwanted growth.

While Botanic Choice does not have any nutritional supplements with Trillium, we do have a fine selection of high quality liquid herbal extracts that provide a wide variety of health benefits. Check one out today!

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably added a couple of pounds over the winter and you’re really not looking forward to revealing your pudgier stomach, thighs and rear at the beach. But don’t search online for the latest fad diet or quick weight loss scheme because they’re unhealthy and don’t work long term. Instead try a natural approach to weight loss, one where you don’t have to go to extreme measures and where you don’t have to deny yourself.

Get ready for swimsuit season

Chew slowly to enhance digestion and savor the flavor. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to receive signals that you are full.

Eat small meals several times a day. Here’s a sample plan: 7AM breakfast (make sure you eat it!); 9:30 AM snack; 11:30 lunch; 2PM snack; 5:30PM dinner; 8PM snack.

During the meal, drink water between bites.

Eat a piece of fruit before dinner. For example, an apple gives you 5 grams of fiber and will help curb your appetite while also enhancing digestion.

Use a smaller salad plate for dinner.

Increase movement. Park at the far end of the parking lot and take the stairs.

Stand up. Standing burns more 40 more calories an hour than sitting. Moving around burns even more.

If you eat bread, choose whole grain bread with at least 2 grams of fiber per slice.

Cut out the soda. I’ve read that if you eliminate soda (both diet and regular), you can lose 10 pounds in a year. My 80 year old mother is trying this and has dropped 4 pounds in 4 months.

Eat your sandwich with just one slice of bread. Better yet, wrap your sandwich in lettuce.

Get 8 hours of sleep. A rested body and mind is healthier so you can make good food choices.

Start slow. The most effective way to lose weight is to change your lifestyle and you need to do that slowly or resentment creeps in. Begin by eliminating a certain type of food or taking a walk around the block a few times a week, and build from there.

Go nutty. Contrary to popular belief, nuts are great for weight loss. They fill you up, contain protein, and give you the right kinds of fats you need. Keep almonds, pecans, and walnuts handy for snacks or as a replacement for a bag of chips.

Don’t skip meals. This sends your body into starvation mode so next time you eat, your body banks the calories for the next “famine.”

Pick exercise you enjoy like dancing, hiking in the woods, tennis, or playing outside with the kids. It doesn’t have to be a formal “workout” routine at the gym. It’s whatever gets you moving.

Brush your teeth. You’ll be inclined to keep your mouth clean.

Dip it. When eating a salad, dip your lettuce into dressing on the side.

Walk while you talk. When talking on the phone, walk around. Walking for 15 minutes a day at 3 mph will burn an extra 1,200 calories a month.

Eat protein at each meal. It takes your body longer to digest protein and satisfies you for longer.

Avoid processed and white foods which are high in calories, sodium and preservatives.

Treat yourself. Every now and then, splurge with a half candy bar or half cup of ice cream. After eating right and exercising all week, a friend of mine treats herself to a chocolate shake on Saturday night. It makes her happy and motivates her to keep going.

In conjunction with the above, try a weight loss supplement. I like Botanic Choice’s Apple Cider Vinegar Plus with Green Tea™ because it suppresses your appetite, promotes fat burning, and enhances digestion. If metabolism is your issue, Metabolic Complex™ is a real breakthrough for stubborn belly fat. Need more energy in your day? Then Acai Slim Complex™ is for you because it boosts energy and cleanses your system too.

Incorporate all or some of the above into your life and you’ll be ready for swimsuit season in no time.
